| TV sucks... |
For the most part, our network television is pretty darn unremarkable. If one were to zap through the channels at any time of day, one would likely find:
* A variety show featuring a roomful of mindless Ž¡ŽÈtalentsŽ¡ŽÉ who are completely and utterly devoid of any actual talent whatsoever * A cooking program
* A cooking program featuring a roomful of mindless talents who watch food being cooked and then sample it and loudly and repeatedly exclaim Ž¡ŽÈOISHII!!!Ž¡ŽÈ * Some kind of quiz show * A quiz show featuring a roomful of mindless talents demonstrating just how mindless they truly are
* A sappy documentary about someone somewhere in the world who faces some sort of adversity (e.g., is looking for a job, is living in a brutal war zone, was born without legs, a combination thereof, etc.) and who Tries His/Her Best¾¤? to overcome the hardships of their situation
* A variety show featuring a roomful of mindless talents watching a sappy documentary and providing their horribly forced reactions to the hardships (tears) and the overcoming of the hardships (more tears) for the sake of the television viewers at home who have to be instructed how to react since they have neither souls nor a capacity for empathy
Once in a while, however, when youŽ¡ŽÇre mindlessly browsing through the various offerings on each of the eleven "non-paytv" channels available to you, something utterly insane and beyond comprehension will catch your eye and youŽ¡ŽÇll freeze, remote in hand, mouth agape, temporarily incapacitated with both shock and amusement in a profound moment of WTF....
but only sometimes

| Dream control |
Takara Toys developed the "Yumemi Koubou (Dream Workshop)", a sort of big PDA that can be programmed to "control dreams". You first decide what you want to dream, then place a related photograph on the screen (e.g. if the dream is to become famous, put the picture of your favorite actor/actress), insert a fragrance in the dispenser, and choose an appropriate background music from the database. Then you must visualize the desired image and pronounce (record) a statement, such as "I want to be famous". After all this process, you leave the Dream Workshop near the bed and go to sleep. The device will play the music or the recorded phrase and release the fragrance during 8 hours, along with the Rapid Eye Movement (REM) sleep pattern. And after 8 hours, it wakes you up with soft music and light.
People who actually used it, complained about the implicit condition of "8 hours of sleep". Most people here in Japan work long hours and sleep an average of 5-6 hours (according to a survey of AC Nielsen)
Dream Workshop was launched in August last year, at 15,540 yen. It even got a prize as "original gift" at the Tokyo International Gift Show (Spring 2004). But one year later, it's being sold at Yahoo Japan Store for...2,980 yen (lol...80%OFF!) Takara Toys will have to come up with something else to see its dream realized... a "dream realizer" would be more successful. Damn dreamers... |

| Choke the Annoying Chicken Doll |
If you're one of those types with a propensity for choking a chicken, choking on some chicken, or getting a chick in a choke hold, or whatever, then you might need one of these.
The Choke the Annoying Chicken Doll is a stuffed chicken that gets frantic when you choke it's neck. Perfect as a conversation piece in the office cubicle.
When you turn it on, it simply dances on your desk, flapping its wings and singing a tune. But when you choke it's neck, the music stops and the chicken starts choking, kicking its legs, flapping its wings, and gagging for dear life.
Oh, and if you have one of those "smart types" who challenges you on the "which came first, the chicken or the egg" discussion, get him the "Squeezy Chicken Egg" gift.

| The iBoy GB Emulator: Mario on the iPod |
Limited screen colour gadget meets another limited screen colour gadget. This time, the hack allow you to play gameboy games on your iPod. The controls to mirror the Gameboy's on the iPod are cleverly executed via the scroll wheel. Hit left on the scroll wheel and you go left, touching the upper right corner of the wheel is the "A" button, Et cetera. I could imagine that'd be difficult. Download the Binary source on GB Emulator now. Er' only if you have a an a 4th Generation iPod. They're currently working on getting the other generations to function. There's a bonus clip of Mario on the iPod here!
The limitations (for now) are as follows:
# Only works on 4g ipods - the actual 4g - ie the grayscale one # 1,2,3G not supported, aegray's analyzing it. # Mini, Photo not yet supported (working on it) # GB Cardrigde Ram, RTC not yet supported # Full speed not yet reached (now 70-80%) # Controls work by touching the wheel at different positions. This makes pressing two buttons (areas of the wheel) at the same time a problem. # The screen is cropped, meaning pixels are lost around the edges. # The battery will drain fast |

POPEYE'S, a "odd" store on the 8th floor of the daikanplaza building. It is a 'costume fetish' store with a twist -- it's not full of soiled, used schoolgirl outfits, or soiled anime character costumes.....
POPEYE'S is full of soiled WORK UNIFORMS. For instance, a used Makudonarudo uniform is about $225. What kind of person has a macdonalds fetish???
I seriously can't believe someone would pay that much money just so they could dress themself or their girlfriend up as a burger-flipper.... but i assume that 'would you like me to supersize that?' jokes are part of the appeal.
Also they have uniforms from this baseball-themed restaraunt inside the Tokyo Dome center....a friend of me works at the same place, so that was hilarious. I checked the polariod though, and it wasn't her.
If used uniforms / underwear / hygine pads are not your deal, you can buy USED LIPSTICK with a little polaroid of the lady using the lipstick -- only $12. It makes me imagine some guy saying: "yeah, those people who buy used pissy panties are totally sick. Not totally well-adjusted normal used-makeup-buying guys like me. we have our shit together." |

| Power-dressing man leaves trail of destruction |
SYDNEY (Reuters) - An Australian man built up a 40,000-volt charge of static electricity in his clothes as he walked, leaving a trail of scorched carpet and molten plastic and forcing firefighters to evacuate a building.
Frank Clewer, who was wearing a woolen shirt and a synthetic nylon jacket, was oblivious to the growing electrical current that was building up as his clothes rubbed together.
When he walked into a building in the country town of Warrnambool in the southern state of Victoria Thursday, the electrical charge ignited the carpet.
"It sounded almost like a firecracker," Clewer told Australian radio Friday.
"Within about five minutes, the carpet started to erupt."
Employees, unsure of the cause of the mysterious burning smell, telephoned firefighters who evacuated the building.
"There were several scorch marks in the carpet, and we could hear a cracking noise -- a bit like a whip -- both inside and outside the building," said fire official Henry Barton.
"We tested his clothes with a static electricity field meter and measured a current of 40,000 volts, which is one step shy of spontaneous combustion, where his clothes would have self-ignited," Barton said.

"A computer programmer found a Roman ruin near his home in Italy when he was playing around with Google Earth & Google Maps." His eye was caught by unusual 'rectangular shadows' nearby. Curious, he analysed the image further, and concluded that the lines must represent a buried structure of human origin. Eventually, he traced out what looked like the inner courtyards of a villa. He, contacted archaeologists, including experts at the National Archaeological Museum of Parma. They confirmed the find. At first it was thought to be a Bronze Age village, but an inspection of the site turned up ceramic pieces that indicated it was a Roman villa. |

| Researchers Decode Messages By Analyzing Typing Sounds |
Is it possible to transcribe what others are typing simply by the listening to the noise their keystrokes make? According to Doug Tygar of the University of California, Berkeley, the answer is yes. Tygar and his colleagues recorded 10 minutes worth of typing and were able to figure out what was being typed just by the sound. Each keystroke has a different sound, which enabled researchers to create a computer program that decodes the sound. Ž¡ŽÈUsing statistical learning theory, the computer can categorize the sound of each key as itŽ¡ŽÇs struck and develop a good first guess with an accuracy of 60 percent for characters, and 20 percent for words,Ž¡ŽÉ explains team member Li Zhuang also of U.C. Berkeley. Ž¡ŽÈWe then use spelling and grammar check to refine the result, which increased the accuracy to 70 percent and the word accuracy to 50 percent.Ž¡ŽÉ |

| Blue diet (silly diet products) |
Balance Diet has launched a blue-coloured "Diet Furikake". Furikake is a flavored seasoning to be sprinkled on rice. It normally comes in fish, egg, plum or seaweed flavors.
The idea of this diet is: the human brain distinguishes between "pleasant" and "non-pleasant" and makes the whole body avoid non-pleasant things. On the other hand, 70% of the information sent to the brain comes from visual perception. If you program your brain to reject carbohydrates through an unpleasant view of food containing them (e.g. rice), you will be able to stop overeating. When you spread the Diet Furikake, the rice is dyed in blue, and your brain will form a negative image of it. It is important that you continue sprinkling it on rice for 7 evenings (they say that for a diet to be effective, reducing the intake of carbohydrates in dinner is the key). If it doesn't work, you should continue for 3 weeks (!).
The manufacturer says that the colour comes from blueberry colouring and the flavor is salty. One box contains 250g or 8.8oz (10 envelopes of 25g each) and comes with a "Blue Rice amulet strap".
i think watching at this picture gives you an idea how it works... |

The oldest person is 112-year-old Yone Minagawa. Although as impressive as this is, Mr. and Mrs. SembaŽ¡ŽÇs record for the worldŽ¡ŽÇs oldest couple is even more staggering. Yae Semba plods along at a sprightly 100-years-old, whilst her husband Nisaburo clocks in at an impressive and statistic contradicting 107. | Apple patent hints at integrated webcams for future iMacs, notebooks |
A patent application has recently surfaced that may indicate AppleŽ¡ŽÇs intention of building webcams directly into future iMacs and notebooks. In keeping with AppleŽ¡ŽÇs habit of patenting technology that everyone is already using, the March 2004 filing shows plans for a webcam built into the screen-side latch of a notebook (much like the cams that Sony has been integrating into their machines for years). Unlike past offerings, however, the Apple patent presents the bold and innovative concept of allowing the webcam to rotate about its horizontal axis. Think Different? You bet! |

| Widescreen Gizmondo specs and pics |

Not sure why they thought itŽ¡ŽÇd be brilliant to officially announce a new version of the Gizmondo before the first one has even gone really on sale, but Tiger Telematics have released some concept images and more details of that new widescreen version of their Gizmondo portable game console they Ž¡ŽÈaccidentallyŽ¡ŽÉ revealed the other day. The specs feel a bit fanciful (ive seen these guys overpromise and underdeliver before), but according to their press release this new version will be a bit more PSP-like and have a 4-inch widescreen, 480 x 272 pixel LCD (which Tiger Telematics helpfully describes as being Ž¡ŽÈrazor-sharpŽ¡ŽÉ), built-in 802.11b/g WiFi, at least a 500MHz processor (the PSP features a 1.3 Ghz processor), GSM/GPRS, GPS, an SD card slot, an analog TV-out port (oh..now this is a sweet feature), Bluetooth, USB On-The-Go, and a built-in two megapixel digital camera. Should be out in Q2 of 2006.

| Keys?U?See ޡ޽ 'World's most visible computer keyboard' |
This keyboard was invented for people with visual impairments but like so many things created for a small subgroup it has much wider applicability.
Who wouldn't want to more easily see the letters on their keyboard? Not only do these keyboards have a large, bold type size and style, but they come in optical yellow as well as white and black.
USB and PS2 connections are built?in.

 $69.95 here. |

| Oooohhh... This Solid Eye thinge...sweet |
Today i bumped into some Girls at the Gameshow pressing a PSP with KonamiŽ¡Žs Solid Eye attachment, running Metal Gear Acid against random peoples Faces... i looked random at the moment, so it was my turn. Wow..this thing gives you the same full color 3d effect like this old 600$ Vfx-2 VR Helmet (Solid EyeŽ¡Žs technology isnt really much different, really clever), it only makes you look like a complete moron when using it..and you dont get what is happening around you. The girls told me that Sony and Konami is even going to release 3d Umd Movies and other Games compatible for this clever Device. The attachment will come bundled with Metal Gear Acid 2, which will be sold for 5,229 yen on December 8.

| Get your groove on |
If you have a TV, you can get your groove on with the Groovetube. Just stick the plastic box on your TV, turn it on, and watch the light and pretty colors from your TV change through the diffused plastic grid. I guess it's useful if you want something to space out in front of, or maybe if you're having a party and want cool ambient lighting. It's like the lavalamp meets the TV yulelog, yeah! |
