In another astonishing development in the Megaupload saga, a judge in New Zealand’s High Court has declared the order used to seize Kim Dotcom’s assets as “null and void”. The blunder, which occurred because the police applied for the wrong type of court order, means that the Megaupload founder could have his property returned.

Just when it seemed that the handling of the Megaupload case couldn’t get any more controversial, a development from New Zealand has taken things to the next level.

Following the raids on Kim Dotcom’s mansion in January, police seized millions of dollars worth of property belong to the Megaupload founder. But thanks to a police blunder, he could now see all of those assets returned.

On Friday, Justice Judith Potter in the High Court declared the order used to seize Dotcom’s property “null and void” after it was discovered that the police had acted under a court order that should have never been granted.

The error dates back to January when the police applied for the order granting them permission to seize Dotcom’s property. Rather than applying for an interim restraining order, the Police Commissioner applied for a foreign restraining order instead, one which did not give Dotcom a chance to mount a defense.

According to New Zealand Herald, on January 30th prosecution lawyer Anne Toohey wrote to the court explaining that the wrong order had been applied for and detailed five errors with the application.

Justice Potter said that police commissioner Peter Marshall tried to correct the error by applying for the correct order after the raids were completed and retrospectively adding the items already seized.

Although the correct order was eventually granted albeit on a temporary basis, Potter said she will soon rule on whether the “procedural error” will result in Dotcom having his property returned.

The Crown is arguing that since the new order was granted the earlier error no longer matters, but Dotcom’s legal team framed it rather differently by describing the seizure of assets as “unlawful”.

Whether the assets are returned will rest on Dotcom’s legal team showing a lack of “good faith” in connection with the blunder. A hearing to decide if the assets will be returned will take place next week.

Director of films with one word titles like as Titanic and Avatar, James Cameron is aiming to accomplish something noteworthy that doesn’t involve an Oscar, actors, or even vaguely cat-lookin’ aliens; he’s going to venture to the ocean’s deepest depths. And maybe, just maybe, he’ll find some aliens. The glowing purple and pink kind, not the cat-lookin’ ones. The spot he’s trying to reach, appropriately named Challenger Deep, is part of the Mariana Trench in the Pacific and the deepest known point in the world’s oceans.

How does he plan to get that deep? Well, it turns out that he has a secret high-tech one-man sub that might be up to the task. He and his team have been plotting the journey for over 5 years now, and as Cameron has begun training in his cramped little submersible, he’s been letting some of the information about his plan leak out.

there are a few impressive statistics that have been released. The sub, equipped with a set of robotic arms and special cameras, has the ability to shoot downward to the sea floor at speeds of 500-700 miles per hour, withstanding pressures up to 16,000 pounds per square inch. As you might expect, the sub is mighty cramped, but Cameron, who finds the sea floor facinating (as you might have been able to guess) finds the cramping worth it. It is so cramped in the cockpit, he has to kneel, unable to stretch his arms, surrounded by this massive steel walls of the ball shaped compartment, the sphere’s internal diameter is 43 inches (109 centimeters) stuffed with all kinds of equipment and instruments..  kindly they left some free space for cameron himself.

“It’s so exciting – every second you see something cool or you’ve got something to do or you’re photographing or you see some amazing fish,” Cameron told CNN while giving them a tour of his cutting edge toy. “You know, there’s so much we don’t know. I’m hopeful that we’ll be able to study the ocean before we destroy it.” He’s not the only one trying to “get deep,” as it were. Virgin playboy billionaire Richard Branson is also taking a stab at it, as is experienced sub pilot Patrick Lahey. Cameron, however, seems to be the front-runner for the moment.

How deep is Challenger Deep exactly? Challengingly deep, as it turns out. Its very pit is a whopping 35,814 feet down, making it an inverted Mount Everest plus an extra 6,785 feet. The greater Marina Trench, of which Challenger Deep is a part, has only had two previous human visitors; this is very uncharted territory.

That being the case, it’s not exactly suprising that there’s a prize out there for pulling off the challenge. The X-prize foundation, which is also offering a $20 million prize for someone who can successfully “rove” on the moon and a $10 million prize for anyone who can build a device that can sequence 100 human genomes within 10 days or less, is offering a cool $10 mil to the first explorer who makes it to the Deep (and back presumably). Cameron, however, has stated he has no particular interest in this prize. He probably doesn’t need the cash.

Finishing up a series of test dives, Cameron plans to make the real dive later this month. What he may find down there is anyone’s guess…

some more technical specs:

• The pilot is descending almost 36,000 feet, but his ears won’t pop during the journey; the pressure inside the pilot’s sphere stays constant.
• At 43 inches internal diameter, and crammed with equipment, the interior of the pilot sphere is so small that the pilot will have to keep his knees bent and can barely move.
• Just like a car, the sub is equipped with “cruise control” so the pilot can hover exactly where he wants to or glide through the water at a constant speed.
• Water vapor from the pilot’s breath and sweat condenses on the cold metal sphere and drains to a space where it’s sucked into a plastic bag. In an emergency, the pilot can drink it.

• The pilot chamber is a sphere because it is the strongest shape for resisting pressure—if the pilot sat in a cylinder the walls would need to be three times thicker.
• The sub’s giant beam of syntactic foam shrinks about 2.5 inches (6.4 centimeters) under the immense water pressure at the ocean’s bottom.
• While the sub appears to be one streamlined vessel, the sphere is attached to the foam beam by polyester straps.
• If the sub’s 1,100 pounds (500 kilograms) of ballast weights don’t drop when commanded, a back-up galvanic release will corrode in the seawater within a fixed period of time, freeing the sub to rise to the surface.

• Small “bladders” inside the oil-filled external battery boxes will take in seawater. The bladders are made from medical drip bags. These “compensation bladders” are a critical part of the deep ocean electronics system, because the oil compresses at depth.
• The submersible will spin slowly as it descends and ascends. It’s engineered to do this so it doesn’t veer off track.
• The sub’s batteries are made up of over 1,000 pouch-type lithium ion cells, bigger versions of the batteries hobbyists use for model airplanes.
• More than 180 systems—from battery packs to sonar—will be operating during the dive.
• Every circuit board in the sub’s exterior electronics—over 1,500 of them—was designed and built specially for this vehicle.
• The sub’s four external cameras are a tenth the size of previous deep ocean HD cameras. The housings were designed by the DEEPSEA CHALLENGE team, and the cameras themselves were created from scratch, from the sensor up.
