A girl’s high school in Nagasaki is planning to add chopstick skills to its battery of entrance exams next year.

Sasebo Women’s High School administration officials say they want to determine whether prospective students are capable of minimal dining etiquette.

The “chopstick inspections,” which include picking up slippery beans, will influence the screening process to a certain degree, officials at the school said.

As crazy as this sounds, some of the younger generation really use some strange grips when it comes to using chopsticks and when writing.

HAL: Putting itself to the fullest possible use

Filed under: misc. — Kei @ 3:22 pm

Yoshiyuki Sankai, the Tsukuba University professor who invented the “hybrid assisted limb” (HAL) bionic suit, i have blogged about several times before, has announced that he is getting ready to start marketing the robot suit.

HAL.jpg

The HAL system detects faint electrical signals through your skin when you move and activates motors to assist in the movement.

A company named Cyberdyne will start out by producing 20 units in 2007, which they expect to increase to 400 to 500 units during 2008.

Owning your very own HAL suit will set you back anywhere from 5 million to 7 million yen, but the company also plans rentals for 70,000 yen per month.

(I wonder what the “buttery pack” does. . .)

NetDisaster. Apply a lot of virtual damage to any website you choose. On a whim. To make yourself feel better. Could be your boss’ home page, a competitor who’s just beaten you to an order, or your ex’s new mySpace profile. Yes it’s pathetic, but what the heck.

Choose what catastrophe you’d like the target-site to suffer from. The disasters are sorted by category. One disaster is selected at random every time you view the home page, but you can select any other.

    Alltunes MP3 Knob

The Alltunes MP3 Knob is an interesting design concept from Plusminus Design. The player is the volume knob. No more, no less. Attach it with a Velcro fastener or magnetic catch and you can turn anything into an MP3 player. Convinced? Yeah….

You have always been aware that your bag can play music, as well as your kettle. They just lacked a volume control and a Play button. Just attach to them our knob-view device via velcro strap or magnet and - Oh Yeah! -now you’ve got an mp3bag or and mp3kettle and mp3whatever-you-want at your disposal.

    There is Whale out there..

Oh… i found some canned Whale in a small neighborhood grocery here in Osaka

    Poor Whales

But to tell you the truth, i am not better than everyone else here… the last time I ate whale was just a few months ago, in the form of whale steak and whale sashimi. I have never had canned whale meat before.

It is very good both grilled like a steak and dipped in soy sauce as frozen sashimi.

Hmm.. and it seems that every time I read a news report about the whaling situation here in Japan I end up getting more and more confused.I keep hearing about how people love to eat whale because it is part of the culinary cultural heritage. Then i read reports that stocks of whale meat in Japan are exploding because not enough people are eating it. I have looked for whale meat at other stores on countless occasions, but you rarely find any, because most stores dont even sell whale. Now i hear that Japan will be buying whale meat from Iceland!

The meat of the first whale caught in Icelandic waters since the North Atlantic nation resumed commercial whaling was destined for consumers in Japan, news reports said Monday.

The roughly 20-metre long fin whale was harpooned Saturday off Iceland’s west coast, and was landed Sunday at a whaling station near Reykjavik.

this kind of thing really makes me wonder just what in the heck is going on here!?!

    Zoom Zoom.

Using stop motion photorapgy trap-jaw ants have been filmed using their jaws at 66mph and with a force of over 300 times their own bodyweight. Also by biting the ground, the ants hurl themselves upwards when danger looms. The ants are named after their characteristically long jaws, which they use to hurl unfamiliar neighbours from their nests, cripple prey, or deliver a brutal bite to anything they consider a threat.

One of my favorite shows on TV today, next to Dirty Jobs and House, is How it’s Made. This show tells you almost every step on how and object is made from airplanes to toothpicks.

And I found a site with videos of most of the episodes, Check it out!
